The history of Vuyk Engineering
The roots of Vuyk Rotterdam stretch back more than 150 years, to the era of wooden ships and the early days of the Nieuwe Waterweg. In 1872, Adrianus Vuijk opened a shipyard in Capelle-West. What began with the repair of wooden vessels soon evolved into a renowned builder of steel and larger seaworthy ships. Even during economic downturns and world wars, Vuyk’s innovative spirit kept the company moving forward. And that spirit continues to drive us today. Explore our rich history below.
1872
Adrianus Vuijk purchased an existing shipyard in Capelle West to begin the construction and repair of wooden ships.
1879
The first steel vessel was launched and so a new chapter began for the company.
1948
Aerial photograph of the shipyard in 1948. During World War II, the shipyard was forced into an adjusted program. In the post-war years, shipbuilding prospered.
1979
Vuyk Engineering & Trading was established, transforming our focus to engineering and services in shipbuilding, design and cost estimation.
1980s
Dedicated engineers meticulously draft designs, showcasing the precision and craftsmanship that defined an era before the digital revolution.
1996
The headquarters moved to a larger building at De Linie in Capelle aan den IJssel, marking its departure from the historic shipyard location.
2011
In 2011, founder of Vuyk Engineering and Trading and former managing director Egbert Dik Vuyk passed away.
2017
In 2017, Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam moved to a large three-story office building, located at Lichtenauerlaan 2 in Rotterdam.
2021
In March 2021, Royal IHC and Royal Doeksen reached an agreement on the acquisition of all shares in Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam.
2024
Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam establishes a new subsidiary in Houston: Vuyk INC. Houston.
2024
Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam establishes a new subsidiary in Malaysia: Vuyk Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.
