TSHD Charles DarwinTrailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD)

Designed to get the best performance in shallow or confined waters

For Jan de Nul Group, Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam performed the main part of the basic design of the 30,500 m3 trailing suction hopper dredger Charles Darwin. The new vessel was specially designed for operation in shallow or confined waters, having a limited design draught and a minimized vessel length.

Basic design

We came together and started on the main construction drawings of the hull and superstructures, including all foundations for the dredging equipment. We did the FEM global hull strength analysis to put all requirements into writing. At the end of a verification project a report is made that meets all the rules and regulations. In the arrangement drawings, we took care of the overall composition of the ship (i.e. engine room).

In July 2007, Jan de Nul Group and La Naval Shipyard in Bilbao, Spain, came together to seal the deal on the construction of a 30,500 m3 trailing suction hopper dredger. Later known as the Charles Darwin. The new vessel is specially designed for operation in shallow or confined waters, having a limited design draught and a minimized vessel length. In the design much attention has been given to the efficient use of the installed power, resulting in low fuel consumption and lower emissions. Two suction pipes, diameter 1200 mm, equipped with submerged dredge pumps of each 3,400 kW are installed. Double-walled electrically driven shore discharging dredge pumps with a total power of 15,000 kW enable discharging the cargo at a high rate, over long distances. For these kinds of projects, you don’t have to look any further than Vuyk Engineering.
